The purpose of the Palermo based " Domina - International Olive Oil Contest " competition, held in May, is to promote and enhance the high quality of the extra virgin olive oil industry.
The Contest, organized by Antonio G. Lauro, Italy and VINAR SA, Argentina for Domina Hotels, aims to promote the connection between extra virgin olive oil and a healthy diet and good nutritional habits as well as providing information on its health advantages for consumers.
The aims of the "D-IOOC Domina International Olive oil Contest" are the following:
- Award the best extra virgin olive oils from all over the world entered in the contest
- Promote among consumers the benefits of extra virgin olive oil in a healthy diet
- Internationally promote the exceptional qualities of extra virgin olive oil produced in various countries
- Promote and give greater visibility to the extra virgin olive oil market in Italy, in the Mediterranean area as well as in the rest of the world
- Explain the advantages of the use of extra virgin olive oil in the Mediterranean diet
- Promote the winning producers among buyers, consumers, international markets and in the various media
- Increase the consumption of high quality extra virgin olive oil internationally
The D-IOOC will follow the following schedule
November 16, 2016- Competition officially opens to entries. In this phase producers may enter samples in the competition (see entry form)
February 1, 2017- First day samples can be shipped to D-IOOC from now until April 15 it is possible to:
-enter samples to the competition (see entry form)
-pay the entry fee(s) (see payment methods)
-ship competing samples to D-IOOC (see sample shipping)
April 15, 2017 Deadline- Last day for all entries. All samples must be received by this date.
May 4, 5, 6 and 7, 2017 Sample evaluation - A panel of experienced judges will evaluate and classify each sample according to the dictums of the IOC (international Olive Council).
The winning samples will also be available for public tasting and international experts in the judging panel will be available to comment on the specific characteristics of each winner.
4. D-IOOC participating Olive Oils
The Contest is EXCLUSIVELY open to extra virgin olive oils in the following categories:
A) Single varietal Extra Virgin Olive Oil
The varieties which may enter the competition must be included in the Olive Germoplasm - Olea Europea.L. data bank which can be consulted at http:www.oleadb.eu/Nuova Banca dati dell'olivo which is constantly updated and contains the information available on the varieties cultivated worldwide.
B) Blended Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Blend of two or more varieties.
The samples of Extra Virgin Olive Oil may also be
C) Conventionally farmed or Integrated farmed Extra Virgin Olive Oil
D) Organically farmed Extra Virgin Olive Oil
E) DOP/IGP designated Extra Virgin Olive Oil
All extra virgin oils from all over the world may compete in the categories above provided they are bottled and bear an official brand label compliant with the laws of the country of origin. Participation to the contest implies accepting the rules and regulations stated here and the decisions of the judging panel which are final.
IMPORTANT: All sample entry forms must be accompanied by a chemical analysis certificate issued by an accredited testing lab (ISO 17025 compliant) indicating free fatty acids, peroxides, and absorption characteristics (K232nm, K270nm, and ΔK) relating to the batch of the sample entered and dated within 240 days prior to submission. All parameters must be within the limits imposed by IOC (IOC/T.20/Doc Varii) and the European Union (Reg. Ce 2568/91 e succ. mod. ed integr.; Reg. d’Esec UE n. 1227/2016).
The D-IOOC contest is open to all individual producers, olive oil mills, producer cooperatives and cooperative associations, bottlers, export companies and any type of business enterprise that produces, bottles and trades in branded extra virgin olive oil. Proof of provenance of all the samples must be guaranteed, on request of the organizing committee, with appropriate documentation.
All submitted samples must bear an official brand label compliant with the laws of the country of origin. Moreover each sample must:
- come from a single homogeneous batch of at least 500 liters
- be bottled in appropriate bottles/containers containing 1 l or less
- be accompanied by certification from an accredited laboratory for product identification
Any departure from the rules, accompanied by a motivated request, may be approved only by the President of the Contest.

All participants will receive via email an entry confirmation to the address provided on the entry form.
Entry fees are non refundable in the case of samples that are non-compliant or received by the organization after the April 15 deadline.
The Organization reserves the right to cancel the event. In this case all entry fees will be refunded but samples will NOT be returned.
Inclusion in the DioocEvoos Guide 2017: All oil samples participating in the D-IOOC will be highlighted in a special guidebook for Buyers which will be distributed at International events.
On entering samples, oil producers will be asked to fill out an on-line technical card on www.d-iooc.com at "Iscrizioni DioocEvoos Guide" This technical card is intended to give essential information and a picture of the bottle of the oil sample entered in the contest must be uploaded. The characteristics of the photo are found in the website. Domina-iooc will devote one page to each of the oil samples entered in the contest with a complete and correct technical card received before April 15, 2017. Incomplete technical cards or photos not compliant to instructions are not guaranteed to be included in the guide.

8. Sample shipping
Producers must ship samples to our offices in Santa Flavia (Palermo) specifying on the address "To the Attention of Ufficio Concorso DIOOC" before April 15, 2017. For each sample:
- 3 (three) bottles or other proper containers containing either 500ml or 750 ml or 1l OR
- 4 bottles or other proper containers containing 250 ml OR
- 6 bottles or other proper containers containing 100 ml
- All sample entry forms must be accompanied by a chemical analysis certificate issued by an accredited testing lab (ISO 17025 compliant) indicating free fatty acids, peroxides, and absorption characteristics (K232nm, K270nm, and ΔK) relating to the batch of the sample entered and dated within 240 days prior to submission.
- All parameters to be identified as Extra Virgin Olive Oil must be within the limits imposed by IOC (IOC/T.20/Doc Varii) and the European Union (Reg. Ce 2568/91 e succ. mod. ed integr.; Reg. d’Esec UE n. 1227/2016).
- All entry forms written in print or typed must be signed by the legal representative of the producer company. The form may be downloaded from the D-IOOC website www.d-iooc.com
Moreover each sample of Extra Virgin Olive Oil entered in the contest must be shipped together with a copy of entry payment receipt accompanied by an invoice with a nominal value of €3.00 per bottle, or else labeling sample packaging "SAMPLE WITH NO COMMERCIAL VALUE-NOT FOR SALE". All bottles or containers must bear an official brand label compliant with the laws of the country of origin.

9. Sample evaluation
After verifying all documentation pertaining to each sample (certification, labels, laboratory tests) as well as the entry documents and the conformity to current legislation, the sample will be placed in its specific category.
The assessment sheet used will be based on the IOC sheet and modified by Domina International Olive Oil Contest (D-iOOC) and will be based on a 1 to 100 point system.
10. The Jury
A technical committee will select the jury and commission members. The number of judges tasting the samples of extra virgin olive oil will depend on the number of samples entered in the contest. A foreseeable number of at least 15 judges plus panel leaders is expected.
Each Tasting panel is formed by 4 members: three judges and a panel leader.
The President and the General Manager of D-IOOC will preside the contest.
To ensure the maximum level of transparency, the D-IOOC judges will not evaluate oils from any company in which they or any of their relatives are involved, be it as producers, bottlers or distributors etc.. To this end, all judges must sign a declaration in which s/he denies or declares involvement with companies in the oil growing, milling or bottling sectors. In the case that a judge does have connections s/he will be assigned oil samples where there is no conflict of interest.
All winners will be notified by e-mail and on the D-IOOC website (www.d-iooc.com) on the results of the contest. This will be the only official communication that a sample has won a prize and states the quality of the product as recognized by the panel of the D-IOOC contest.
Any other form of advertising or communication of the results must be considered "temporary" awaiting the final communication on the official contest website.
Any specific information regarding the judge's assessment identifying organoleptic qualities as well as any negative qualities and scoring of the samples may be requested in writing by the producer.
There are two distinct categories of awards in the D-IOOC. see 12) Awards.

A special award medal or trophy including a certificate validating the award will be presented to the category D-IOOC Best of Regione Sicilia.
Trophies will be presented at the awards ceremony to the official representative of the producer or his delegate. The awards may also be picked up within a few days after the ceremony, in alternative they may be shipped on written request of the producer and at his entire expense to the address provided on the entry form.
First Class Awards
All winners of other awards (D-IOOC Domina International Olive Oil Contest Gold Medal; D-IOOC Domina International Olive Oil Contest Silver Medal), will receive a certificate validating the award and specifying the category of the award. This certificate is downloadable from the official contest website after 15 daysfrom the end of the contest.
The D-IOOC is offering awards in various categories which will be divided into Top Ten Awards, and First Class Awards.

Winners will be permitted to order adhesive labels showing the category of the award won to be affixed to the labels of the winning product in order to promote sales and the EVOOs of the contest.
Cost of each single roll of labels will be communicated after the contest.
In case the winning producer wants to print the winning category label directly onto his own label he may ask for a quotation directly to the organizing committee at email@example.com
Winners will be permitted to affix the adhesive labels supplied by the Contest Organization ONLY to bottles containing the same oil (same harvest, olive varietals and production batch) and in the same packaging as the winning sample. Any other use of the Contest Award label is not permitted.
13. Terms and Conditions
The Technical Committee reserves the right to send samples of the winning EVOOs to an independent laboratory for chemical analysis to ensure conformity.
A sample of all winning EVOOs (one or more bottles) will remain at the contest site for 30 days after the end of the contest, under the responsibility of the President, in order to be available for further testing.
Only after this date will the samples be freed for promotional activities and advertising for the quality of EVOO in schools, hotels, academies, expositions, trade fairs and other general promotional activities. Every single participant company is responsible for the information contained in the entry form and the Technical Committee reserves the right to ascertain its authenticity.
DISPUTES: All results and decisions of the judging panel and the D-IOOC President are final. In no case will samples undergo further tasting. On entering this contest acceptance of this specific fact is implied.
It is illegal to copy or to forge the name, logo or winner labels and Award Certificates; these are only available to the winning companies. Offenders will be prosecuted to the utmost consented by law.
In case of disputes with the D-IOOC Domina International Olive Oil Contest, the parties agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Milan court notwithstanding the nationality of the contestants.
The only official recognized languages for documents concerning the D-IOOC are Italian and English.
The Organizing Committee reserves the right to change the above terms and conditions at any time in case of necessity.
